The need for “architectural landmarks that can become an iconic image” is an inherent part of the political history of cities and their development. On a national level, the ‘Guggenheim effect’ in Bilbao or the nearby example of the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia serve as references. However, we recognize that we live in a time when rediscovering what is our own, rather than importing global and foreign models, strengthens our ecological sensitivity—in this case, cultural sensitivity, or even subjective sensitivity, as Félix Guattari would put it.
In other words, we believe more in an alternative idea of City Branding than in that of Author Branding. To this end, La Bella y La Bestia creatively exaggerates and manipulates elements not only from the local port and maritime culture but also from Alicante’s own architectural and artistic history. In this sense, the proposal takes on its first monumental quality by celebrating—through its form, materiality, and interior experience—the unique knowledge accumulated by the people of Alicante.
